Posted by The Verge on May 15, 2020 03:12:33California is in the midst of its sixth year of smoke-related wildfires, which are destroying at least 8 million acres of land and causing tens of thousands of deaths.
And while the fire season is only in its sixth week, the smoke is still being felt throughout California.
While California fires are now in their third week of spreading, that number could double, with another 3,000 acres of smoke expected to be destroyed by the end of the week.
And for those who think the smoke won’t reach California anytime soon, there’s good news: The Smoke Satellite Tracker is a satellite tracking app that can help track where smoke is spreading.
The first satellite, launched in January, was able to provide information about the extent of smoke and smoke-producing fires in California, including a map of the entire state.
But the Tracker now has data from more than 400 satellites in three countries, including the United Kingdom, United States and Israel.
That data is fed into Google Earth, which is used to track wildfires and other hazards in the United States.
