NEW YORK — Tesla Motors Inc. announced Tuesday that it has sold 500,001 Model S sedans to owners in the United States and Canada.
The automaker sold the Model S and S Plus sedans, which start at $69,400 in the U.S., to more than 300,000 customers from April to June, the company said in a statement.
The company said the cars were delivered between June 4 and July 6.
In addition to the sale of the cars, the automaker said it plans to increase its fleet of high-end cars in Canada by at least 10,000 vehicles.
Tesla said the automakers decision to sell to Canadians is “another step in the transformation of our Canadian manufacturing operations” and will allow it to continue to expand its Canadian business.
The automakers vehicles are built in Mexico and assembled in the San Luis Obispo area in California, where the company has more than 100,000 employees.
Last year, Tesla sold about 100,001 vehicles worldwide to consumers, the highest level of sales in history, according to Tesla.
