A satellite spy system was hacked by Israel, according to reports, and the information was sent to the US, US officials said on Thursday.
A senior official from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which is involved in the cyberattack, told AFP news agency that Israel was probing the matter.
Israel has been accused of hacking US satellites.
A top Israeli official told The Associated Press news agency the hack took place between March and May.
The Israeli foreign ministry said Israel had asked the US to investigate.
“It’s true that we were in contact with the United States and asked them to investigate,” the official said.
“We’ve received no response from them yet.”‘
The Israelis are going to hack our satellites’Israel’s cyberattack on the US satellite monitoring program comes amid growing concerns in the region about growing Iranian influence in the Middle East.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has been increasingly critical of US President Donald Trump’s efforts to improve relations with Iran, and has called on Israel to stop cooperating with Tehran.
Israel says it was not involved in cyberattacks on the Israeli government.
But the Pentagon said on Wednesday that Israel had hacked a computer network in Iran to try to “intercept and steal” US military secrets.
“The Israelis will hack our military satellites, and we are going a step further, we are also going to go a step farther, and they will not stop until they get what they want,” said a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“They are going the way of Iran and they are going for us.
This is the way it’s going.”
The Israeli Foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called on Tehran to refrain from cyberattacks.
“If Iran wants to make any changes, they should stop hacking the US and instead make it a priority to fix their own networks, to find new ways to improve the security of their systems, and to be very transparent with their people,” Tillerson said in a statement on Wednesday.
The US is currently reviewing whether to launch new sanctions against Iran following the hacking.
The attack also came as Iran accused Israel of interfering in the Iranian election.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on its website that the US had been trying to undermine the Iranian elections.
“Washington is trying to make the Iranian government accept the Zionist idea of a united Palestine, as it is already doing in the US,” it said.US officials have said they do not believe that Iran has tried to influence the elections, and said that the alleged interference had been “overblown”.
“The United States is focused on ensuring that Iran does not interfere in the upcoming election, which the American people will choose on November 9,” said the State Department’s spokesperson, Heather Nauert.
But Iranian officials have accused Israel and Washington of meddling in their elections, with the latter saying on Wednesday: “There is no evidence that the Iranian people have participated in any way in the elections of the Israeli prime minister.”
Israel and the US have previously clashed over Iran.
The tensions were highlighted after US lawmakers voted to cut $1.6bn in aid to the country.
Israel and Iran have both disputed that the aid was intended to help the Iranian regime, and Iran’s foreign ministry accused Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations of calling the US an “enemy of the state of Israel”.
Iran has long been accused by Israel of attempting to undermine regional stability by its nuclear programme.
Israel is the main US ally in the Gulf, but Washington has backed Iran in the campaign against the Islamic State group.
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has warned that “any country that does not respect international law” could be targeted.
